Maya Perest is a young Turkish singer, songwriter and composer who has drawn attention in recent years by blending traditional Anatolian melodies with modern, universal sounds; she describes herself as a "modern shaman." Born in Izmir in 1996, she studied classical piano for seven years at Dokuz Eylül University's State Conservatory and later earned a master's degree in art philosophy at Paul-Valéry University in Montpellier, France. A multilingual multi-instrumentalist writing in Turkish, French and English, she draws inspiration from a wide range of sources, from Aşık Veysel and Bob Dylan to poets Forough Farrokhzad and Ahmed Arif.
