James Carter is widely regarded as one of the most gifted and technically flawless American jazz saxophonists of the contemporary era, a true wind-instrument virtuoso who plays nearly every member of the saxophone family — tenor, soprano, baritone and bass — with exceptional command. Born in Detroit in 1969, he is known for mastering "overblowing" techniques that push the instrument's limits and for a wide-ranging repertoire spanning traditional jazz roots to free jazz and the avant-garde; he grew up steeped in Detroit's rich musical tradition as a cousin of famed jazz violinist Regina Carter. His 1993 album "JC on the Set" brought him worldwide attention, and career milestones followed with "Chasin' the Gypsy," a tribute to Django Reinhardt, and "Gardenias for Lady Day," a homage to Billie Holiday, as he joined the roster of storied label Blue Note Records. Beyond jazz stages, he also performs with symphony orchestras, having premiered composer Roberto Sierra's "Concerto for Saxophones and Orchestra," written specifically for him, with major orchestras around the world.
