Mehmet Fatih Erkoç is one of the most important figures in Turkish pop and jazz, a singer, composer, lyricist and versatile multi-instrumentalist regarded as one of Turkey's most respected artists for his powerful voice and mastery of dozens of instruments. Born in Istanbul's Fatih district in 1953, he began playing violin at age 3 after his oud-playing father Hasan Erkoç recognized his talent, and trained for seven years in trombone, piano and double bass at the Istanbul Municipal Conservatory; after working with prestigious groups like the Istanbul Development Orchestra, he lived in Norway for about 11 years, playing trombone, flute, saxophone, trumpet and oud in various orchestras there. Returning permanently to Turkey in 1986, Erkoç won the 1st Kuşadası Golden Dove Song Competition with "Yol Verin A Dostlar," a song he wrote, composed and performed himself, repeating the feat in 1989, and hosted the acclaimed music program "Yankılar" on TRT. He created iconic 1990s hits including "Ellerim Bomboş," "Sana Deliyim" and "Penceremden Gökyüzüne," and today lives aboard his sailboat in Bodrum, known for his passion for the sea.
