Efkan Şeşen, born in Istanbul in 1963 to a family of Laz descent, is a Turkish composer, singer and songwriter widely regarded as an important voice in Turkey's özgün and protest music traditions. After Turkey's 1980 military coup, he spent 1980 to 1987 in prison, where he discovered the whistling technique that would later become part of his musical signature. In 1987 he became lead singer of the veteran protest music group Grup Yorum, before moving to a solo career in 1991. Following his 1995 album Dokuz Altı Yollarında, he released two fully instrumental whistling albums in 2008 and 2010 — a first in Turkey — and in 2021 put out ID, an album of peace songs sung in nine different languages. He currently lives and works in the Netherlands.
