Arturo Sandoval is regarded as one of the greatest living legends of jazz, a Cuban-American trumpeter, pianist and composer world-famous for his virtuosic fusion of Afro-Cuban rhythms with modern jazz, his astonishing technique and his legendary high notes on trumpet. Born in 1949, he met his greatest inspiration, jazz legend Dizzy Gillespie, in Cuba in 1977; Gillespie became his mentor and closest friend, directly helping Sandoval defect and seek asylum in the United States in 1990 to escape Cuba's communist regime. Far more than just a jazz trumpeter, he began classical trumpet training at age 12 and has built a career as a versatile classical performer and pianist, earning 10 Grammy Awards, 6 Billboard Awards, an Emmy, and the prestigious Kennedy Center Honors. His life story was dramatized in the 2000 film "For Love or Country: The Arturo Sandoval Story," starring Andy García, and he has periodically toured Turkey, performing sold-out shows in cities like Istanbul and Izmir.
