Ajda Pekkan

Singer

Ayşe Ajda Pekkan, known in Turkish pop as the "Superstar," is one of the country's biggest and most influential music icons with a career spanning more than 50 years. Born in Istanbul in 1946 to a family of Bosniak descent, she began her artistic career in 1961 with the support of her sister Semiramis Pekkan, reaching out to İlham Gencer and performing at the popular club Çatı; after winning first place in Ses magazine's "Film Actress Competition" in 1963, she first rose to prominence as an actress, appearing in nearly 50 black-and-white Yeşilçam films before leaving cinema entirely to focus on music. In the 1970s she worked with lyricists like Fikret Şeneş and Ülkü Aker and became a pioneer of the "aranjman" movement — setting Turkish lyrics to foreign melodies — delivering dozens of enduring classics including "Kimler Geldi Kimler Geçti," "Bambaşka Biri," and the recent hit "Yakar Geçerim." She represented Turkey at Eurovision in 1980 with "Petr Oil," was honored with the title of "State Artist" by the Republic of Turkey in 1998, and has influenced generations with her powerful vocal technique and a modern vision that has kept pace with every era.
